Ulpukan muodoltaan kärsämäinen hedelmä on innoittanut
useita kansanomaisia nimiä, kuten jokipossu ja kärsäkukka.
White Water Lily and Yellow Water-lily
European White Water Lily (Nymphaea alba) and Yellow Water-lily (Nuphar lutea) are aquatic plants that many cottagers have seen on their fishing trips. Both of them are examples of so called floating-leaf water plants: they have large and flat leaves that float on water surface. European White Water Lily and Yellow Water-lily have been used for food during emergency periods. There are several common names for the Yellow Water-lily in Finnish language, inspired by it's snoutshaped fruit: "river pig" and "snout flower", to mention just a few of them freely transcribed in English.
